Evaluation of the Education Practicum Program 1977-1978. Faculty of Education Program Evaluation Report Number 1.
Ratsoy, Eugene W.; And Others
Designed as the first stage of a four-year evaluation of the education practicum program at the University of Alberta, this study had two major purposes. The first was to provide a pool of data to serve as a base line against which to compare new practicum programs. The second was to identify satisfactory and unsatisfactory aspects of the program. Questionnaires and interviews were given to participants in the three major practicum courses offered. Data analysis was accomplished through frequency counts, descriptive statistics, tests, analysis of variance, and chi squares. A total of 41 separate findings emerged concerning the structure and content of the practicum, student preparation for the practicum, integration of the practicum with education courses, role of the cooperating teacher, role of the faculty consultant, student evaluation procedures, external organizational procedures, external organizational aspects, effectiveness in overcoming the deficiencies of student teachers, and achievement of critical objectives. Mean overall ratings indicated a moderate to good assessment of the practicum program. Companion publications examine other aspects of the teacher preparation program. (Author/JM)
