Improving Visual Perceptual Skills in Art Classes in Secondary Schools, School Year 1975-1976.
Corwin, Sylvia; Mortensen, Erik
The Reading Improvement Through Art (RITA) program, an interdisciplinary approach to remedial reading that combines reading and visual arts activities, was evaluated in nine New York City high schools. A total of 240 students participating in the program were pre and posttested during the fall 1975 and spring 1976 semesters. The results of this evaluation showed that the participating students made exceptional growth in reading, growth that was beyond statistical expectations. The school attendance of the participating students also showed improvement. Based on these data and comments from reading teachers who participated in RITA, the program received a positive evaluation, with recommendations for its continuation and expansion. (RL)
