The Ville: The Ethnic Heritage of an Urban Neighborhood.
Toft, Carolyn Hewes, Ed.
The purpose of this booklet is twofold: (1) to train students to undertand and use the wealth of cultural materials on this American urban neighborhood of St. Louis, The Ville; and (2) to provide a booklet for the use of students and community members about the historical life of this community. The account of life in The Ville from its settlement in the late 18th century to the present is taken from the records of institutions and from the memories of the people living in the neighborhood. The research was conducted through field methods that include participant observation in the community, analysis of historical documents, survey research conducted among a sample of the population, open ended interviews with community leaders, and the tape recording of oral histories with three generations of community residents. Through the use of this variety of research methods, the compilers of the document have put together a picture of a community over time and a record of the ethnic heritage of the people who created the community.
