Project Exploration. A Ropes Course Curriculum Guide.
Nice, Trish
A year-long adventure physical education program is described in this guide, which contains objectives, activities, and information about community support and staff development that applies to this, or any, innovative program. Chapter I discusses the philosophy of experiential learning and lists program objectives, which include developing balance, agility, and coordination; students' ability to work successfully in groups; appreciation of the natural environment; problem solving skills; and self confidence. Chapter II describes the program elements: warm-up exercises, balance activities, initiative problems, cross country skiing, and games of a noncompetitive or friendly competitive nature. Chapter III covers the developmental sequence of class activities and suggests ways to adapt activities to special weather conditions and to group and individual needs. A class schedule lists activities by month (September through June) and refers the reader to separate publications ("Cowtails and Cobras" and "The New Games Book") for directions for specific activities. Chapter IV discusses staff and student responsibilities for safety and lists specific belaying procedures used for climbs. The final chapter offers suggestions for maintaining staff morale and enlisting community support for a ropes course or similarly innovative program. (JH)
