Teaching Career/Life Planning: An In-Service Training Module for Teaching Affective Career/Life Planning Skills.
Miller, Susan W.
This workbook provides an in-service training module designed to assist community college educators and counselors in teaching effective planning skills for successful job hunting and employment. A rationale for career/life planning is followed by a discussion of the terminology and the processes involved in establishing life goals and designing strategies to achieve them. The workbook then describes selected federal and state equal opportunity legislation relating to employment and provides a list of questions that may and may not be legally asked at a job interview. Next, exercises and guidelines are suggested to help students organize internal/personal data and present a positive self-image. Included in this section are questions for personal trend analysis, a self-assessment inventory, a worksheet for the analysis of personal time management, tips for presenting oneself at a job interview, and methods of effective resume presentation. External sources of career information are then identified and methods of helping students organize information and achieve their goals are discussed. A bibliography of career resource directories is included. (Author/JP)
