Professional Leave, Fiscal 1979, Follow-Up Report. Washington Public Colleges and Universities. Report 80-8.
Johnson, Jackie M.
Information is presented on policies and administration of professional leave activity in the public two-year and four-year institutions of higher education in Washington State. The survey of a sample of 1979-81 leaves sought information on selection criteria, purposes, and evaluation of accomplishments. Questions provided data on the following: the percentage of those applying for professional leave who are granted leave in an academic year; the official or committee responsible for recommending that an applicant be granted leave and the criteria used; the official responsible for determining that the purposes of the leave were fulfilled; evaluation of the institutional benefits of the leave accomplishments. Responses indicated substantial similarities in the administrative procedures for approving and evaluating professional leaves. There was evidence of a very direct relationship between the purposes of an approved leave and the institutional responsibilities of the faculty member. Responses also indicated a formal review process that is based on tangible documentation of the faculty member's leave. Responses by individual colleges to the question regarding the way the purposes of the leave related to the individual's institutional responsibilities are included. A fiscal 1979 report on professional leave and amending legislation are appended. (SW)
