Designing for Development: Four Programs for Adult Undergraduates. A Working Report of Programs at: Clark University, Loretto Heights College, Mary Baldwin College, Vermont State Colleges.
Loretto Heights Coll., Denver, CO.
Adult education program designs are described for four institutions: Mary Baldwin College, Loretto Heights College, the Vermont State Colleges, and Clark University. A network formed among these institutions serving as a mutual support system by which research and literature could be exchanged. Four common premises developed: (1) the decision to return to school is a major step in an adult's life; (2) adults often seek more from their return to education than further accumulation of knowledge or technical training; (3) in order to respond to adult's needs, institutions must make changes in curriculum, teaching, and administration; and (4) for adult programs to flourish, a strong institutional commitment is needed. Three major areas are examined. Administration and Institutional Integration discusses creating a congruity of purpose, balancing integration and autonomy, and financial feasibility. Curriculum and Program Design examines developing a purpose, adults as students, the learning process, and curriculum models. Adult Development focuses on enrollment and adult development. Provided within each area for consideration are the individual institution's program response. Institutional addresses and contact persons are provided. (LC)
