Contained within this state science guidelines booklet are numerous resources to aid educational planners and decision makers in developing and selecting science curricula appropriate for grade levels K-12. Within the first section, the purpose, philosophy and a model for a science education program that promotes scientific literacy are provided. The second section presents the grade level expectations. Included within this section are exit objectives by grade level and example activities appropriate for the stated objective. Emphasized are important concepts, skills, and attitudes appropriate for a specific grade level. The organization of these concepts and processes is based upon developmental learning theories (levels specified are preoperational, concrete operations, and formal operational). The appendix contains supportive material (i.e., reference lists, classroom materials suggestions), including a directory of educators in Kansas who offer consulting assistance concerning mathematics and/or science programs.
