This report describes the Swedish television audience and its consumption of television programming during the decade 1965-1974. The analysis is based on data gathered in approximately 100,000 interviews conducted during four time periods selected to permit comparison of audience behavior at different times before and after the introduction of the 2-channel system. An additional criterion for selection was primarily that the time periods should differ as much as possible in terms of the nature of the programming offered and the prevailing principles of coordination of channels. Program categories, defined on the basis of form, content, and intended audience, include news bulletins, news and news commentaries, politics and public affairs, cultural and religious programs, nature or science, variety and talk shows, sports, theatre, music, feature films, other fiction, entertainment, education, children's programs, and miscellaneous. Variables included in the study are broadcast time per program type; viewing time per day and per channel; viewing and sex, age, and education; audience size per program category; high and low consumer viewing time; and program preferences.
