Expanding Work Options for Exceptional Students: A Self Instructional Manual.
Johnson, Carole M.
The self instructional manual is designed to assist regular and special educators in providing meaningful and appropriate career education experiences for exceptional students. Section 1, "Fundamentals of Career Education," provides an overview of the concept of career education, its theoretical foundations, definitions, differences in terms of educational programs, its phases, and its elements and outcomes. Model lesson plans are given. Section 2, "Career Education for Exceptional Individuals," is intended to provide a greater understanding of who exceptional individuals are, how exceptionalities may impact upon career development, and how career education can assist exceptional students in their career development processes. Section 3, "Implementing Career Education for Exceptional Learners," assists the reader in bringing together the various components involved in providing career education to exceptional individuals. The section covers individualized education programs (IEPs), identification and use of available resources, approaches to customizing instruction in reading and mathematics, and approaches for making learning experiences in the classroom active rather than passive. Each section concludes with a list of references and suggested readings. Section 3 also contains a class planning guide. Definitions of terms required by P.L. 94-142 (the Education for All Handicapped Children Act), and sample IEP, lesson plan, and planning guide forms are provided. (SBH)
