The Meaning of Work in Literature Popular With Sixteen and Seventeen-Year Olds.
Kaiser, Marjorie M.
This analysis of 22 of the 29 most popular books selected through the 1978 Books for Young Adults Poll shows the books to have considerable career content and largely to present characters with positive attitudes toward work. The 29 books are listed and the 22 career-oriented books are discussed in terms of the kinds of work represented in the books, the proportions of sexes and races represented among the principal characters, the number of characters presented in sexually or racially stereotyped roles, the age groups represented by the principal characters, the attitudes toward work expressed by the principal characters, what the principal characters chiefly value in their work, the attitudes toward occupational choice expressed by the principal characters, and the extent to which the books uphold basic career education concepts. A table representing the reinforcement of career education concepts in the 22 books is included. (AEA)
