Nonverbal behavior is an important aspect of the film and is one of the several tools that a director uses to communicate to an audience the characters' feelings and relationships. By adding to this information their own personal responses, viewers often experience strong feelings. With reference to the social psychological research of nonverbal behavior three categories are described: kinesics, prozemics, and paralanguage. Examples which define these categories and demonstrate their importance are offered, through descriptions of scenes from several films and discussions of two filmclips from "Julia" (1977). Eye contact, personal space and voice quality serve to create emotional moods for the viewer as well as for the performers. (Author/CKJ)
