The Role of the Wilderness Experience in the Treatment of the Youthful Offender: A Conference Report (Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, March 4-6, 1977).
Wichmann, Theodore F., Ed.
This report chronicles a workshop intended to speak to the needs of directors and instructors working in established wilderness rehabilitation programs for delinquent youth. Issues such as the formation of a professional association, the need for future conferences, and the development of reliable communication channels within the field are considered. Position papers are presented on the need for community involvement and follow-up in wilderness experience programs, the relationships created between young participants and adult instructors, the application of role theory to these relationships, and the needs for a staff training and program development, as well as evaluation methods for wilderness programs and staff. Examples of various forms and questionnaires used during the conference are included, and a listing of participants is appended. (LH)
