Library and Information Services for Meeting Personal Needs. A Discussion Guide.
Schuman, Patricia Glass
This discussion guide on the conference theme, Library and Information Services for Meeting Personal Needs, is intended to provide a starting point and a possible framework for discussion of the issues involved in the provision of information to meet needs ranging from basic facts about survival to advanced forms of intellectual self-realization, for users from widely varying backgrounds and age groups. Following a general introduction, background information is presented in each of five discussion-topic sections, which in turn are subheaded with a variety of sample discussion alternatives. The five issues are concerned with (1) whether library and information providers should offer new services to meet personal needs; (2) national policy issues that must be addressed if libraries and information services are to effectively meet personal needs; (3) how library and information services should be expanded or redesigned to meet the needs of special constituencies; (4) what legislative and funding initiatives are required to foster effective use of limited library resources; and (5) measures that will encourage maximum use of the nation's information resources. A summary in Spanish and a list of nine references are included. (SW)
