The six issues examined in this discussion guide on the conference theme, Library and Information Services for Effectively Governing Society, are introduced by brief discussions providing background on libraries and governing society, and the roles of the library in enhancing the government of society in the future. The six issues are concerned with (1) effective distribution of information for governing society, (2) sharing of the government's legislative information system developed by the Congressional Research Service, (3) new and expanded library services, (4) freedom of information, (5) preservation of information sources necessary for governing society, and (6) a national information policy.
