The Assessment of Postural Control, Reflex Integration, and Bilateral Motor Coordination of Young Handicapped Children. Final Report.

A measurement device, Assessment of Sensorimotor Integration in Preschool Children, was developed to assess postural control, reflex integration and bilateral motor integration in developmentally delayed children (3 to 5 years old). The test was administered to 113 normal children and results were compared with data collected on 23 developmentally delayed children. Among findings were the following: in the area of reflex integration, the tonic neck reflexes in the quadraped position were the best indicators of integrated function; in the area of bilateral motor integration, symmetrical grasp patterns measured in the rolling pin activity and the ablity to cross the body midline or transfer to a preferred hand were identified as the most basic skills; and cooperating therapists reported they found the test to be useful for 3 to 5 year olds who had gross and fine motor delays, learning disabilities, hypotonic cerebral palsy, and mild to moderate mental retardation. Appendixes, which make up the bulk of the document, include a manual entitled "Assessment of Sensorimotor Integration in Preschool Children" by G. DeGangi, the parent's checklist, informed consent form, sample activities for parents, and a copy of the validity questionnaire. (SBH)
