Testing the Untestable: A Vision Screening Program for Exceptional Children.
Bishop, Virginia E.; Godolphin, Vivienne
Based on a longitudinal study of vision screening techniques for handicapped children at the Chester County (Pennsylvania) Child Development Center, the paper reports on the development of a battery of effective vision screening methods for children with low functioning handicapped children. Specific tests are described, including the Sheridan Tests for Young Children and Retardates (STYCAR). Techniques for administering these tests are explained in detail. Vision screening procedures at the Center are reviewed with emphasis on the procedures and tests used during 1978-79. A chart listing vision symptoms in decreasing order of frequency is provided. Also given are the referral standards and a statistical analysis of the 1978-79 results. Appended are procedures used to screen acuity (usinq the Snellen "E" chart), tracking and convergence; a detailed description of the graduated STYCAR tests; a discussion of the observational assessment used with the lowest functioning (M.A. less than 1 year); and sample forms.
