The material in this monograph is an abridgement of an earlier research monograph by the author and Robert J. Fitzsimmons. It was developed to provide teachers with a convenient guide to spelling instruction. The areas discussed include word lists, word meanings, the list form of word presentation, syllabication, the corrected test procedure, the test-study-test procedure, writing words missed, spelling rules, phonics and spelling, time allotment, marking hard spots, spelling games, contemporary spelling programs and workbooks, the elements of a good spelling program, the role of learning in a spelling program, testing, student record keeping, and method of word study. Each section includes a statement of what research supports as a viable teaching practice and includes comments and citations to relevant research.
