Newspaper Internships in Education for Journalism: The Historical Perspective.
De Mott, John
This review of the literature describes several studies of the status of journalism internship programs as they address the following issues: requiring internship programs for graduation, awarding academic credit for such programs, paying student participants for their contributions to newspapers, involving journalism faculty in internship projects or delegating supervision to newspapers, and developing standardized guidelines for such programs. Results of surveys undertaken from 1943 to the present by the Association for Education in Journalism, the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the American Newspaper Publishers Association, Women in Communications, the American Society of Journalism School Administrators, and other professional organizations are presented, along with several sets of recommendations for internship programs.
