The major purpose of this project was to further develop, expand, diffuse, demonstrate, and evaluate an educational program which provides an experience-based career education (EBCE) component at the secondary level in three Florida school districts and one postsecondary site. These four components, acting as a consortium, were extensions of currently operating exemplary career education models. Each site was to determine unique strategies and activities which evolved over the last three to five years of operation of career education school based programs. State planning activities were conducted through a task force of representatives from the four systems. Limited funding was a problem at each location. A third-party evaluation was conducted based primarily on post-test and archival data. Some of their findings included the following: (1) EBCE was rated highly successful by the students, employers, and parents surveyed; (2) the present plan for one learning coordinator to run all aspects of EBCE in a school does not appear sound; (3) several difficult management problems occurred during the first year; (4) the original set of objectives was overly optimistic in regard to resources and time schedules, and many objectives did not correspond to project activities; and (6) the task force completed a draft Procedures Manual as the major outcome of the year. Some recommended changes to make the manual more useful to local staff and students were suggested by the third-party evaluators. (BM)
