A Competency-Based Approach to Secondary Student Teaching in Physical Education.

The effects of a competency based intervention strategy on selected behaviors of student teachers in physical education were investigated to determine if there was any subsequent change in two categories of pupil behavior. Subjects received a competency based package, which included specific instructions, a reading sheet, graphic feedback, cues, reinforcement, and weekly goals. Rates per minute for selected teacher behaviors and the percentage of pupils engaged in the two pupil behavior categories were plotted to form a profile of both teaching and pupil behaviors. These profiles illustrated the way teachers and pupils behaved in the physical education environment during both pre-intervention and intervention conditions. Significant increases were observed in both teachers' positive behaviors and pupils' engagement in appropriate behavior. (JD)
