The opinion is set forth that intense competition for individual promotion in higher education institutions is counter-productive to the achievement of educational excellence. It is proposed that individual development as well as the development of successful college programs are better served by mutual support, cooperation, and intelligent compromise. A framework is presented outlining foci of possible compromise and areas of functioning in which cooperation obtains desired results. (JD)
