Resource Guide: Romanian Americans in Lake County, Indiana: An Ethnic Heritage Curriculum Project.
A resource guide suitable for secondary level for teaching about Romanian Americans and their contributions is presented. Following two essays which describe the country of Romania and the story of Romanian Americans in Lake County, Indiana, four sections trace the development of the Romanian community. Section I discusses the history and causes of immigration and life in the New World. Section II depicts the Romanian immigrant's life in the early days. Homes, origins of societies, boardinghouses, the saloon, words and music to Romanian ballads, and Romanian immigrant poetry are presented. Section III discusses organizations and activities of the Romanian American community in Lake County. The churches, weddings, funerals, fraternal, beneficial, and cultural societies, the Romanian language newspapers, World War I, business ventures, education, and language are described. Section IV considers post World War II changes in terms of the arts, and intellectual, professional, and occupational activities. Filmstrip frames with narrative for "The Story of Romanian Americans in Pictures" plus Romanian foods and recipes are provided in the appendix. (KC)
