The Salt Book.
Wood, Pamela, Ed.
Researched, written, illustrated, and photographed by Kennebunk, Maine, high school students under the guidance of their English teacher, this book documents the skills, crafts, and attitudes needed for survival in northern New England. Information gathered by personal interviews, on-site observation, and research is organized into two sections: The Sea and The Land. Besides profiles of colorful local residents there are articles about fishing, gill netting, trawling, lobstering, rum running, harvesting sea moss, lighthouses, barn raising, farming, hunting wild honey bees, and other "Yankee doings". Detailed descriptions of how to make lobster traps, snow shoes, flintlocks, and stone walls are included, as are several recipes. Contributors to each article are listed. (SB)
