The Educational Background of Parents of Postsecondary Students in Canada.

The educational background of parents of postsecondary students at two time periods (1968-69 and 1974-75) is reported in relation to the educational attainment of the Canadian population. After an introduction that provides the rationale for the study, enrollment patterns, participation rates and student support programs in postsecondary education are examined. The educational attainment of parents of postsecondary students in 1974-75 is discussed in chapter 2. Findings show that 75 percent of the fathers of full-time community college students in terminal programs had only elementary or secondary education, while only 50 percent of those students in graduate programs had fathers in this category. Similar patterns were observed for mothers. A comparison of the educational attainment of parents between 1968-69 and 1974-75 is presented in the third chapter. Among findings of this comparison are that undergraduate students' parents were statistically similar in both time periods, with proportionately fewer parents having advanced degrees among community college students, and a somewhat higher proportion holding at least a university degree among graduate students. The realtionship of educational attainment of postsecondary students' parents compared to the Canadian population is examined in chapter 4. A tentative conclusion is that although greater access to higher education has not occurred in universities, it seems to have taken place in the community college sector. Further tables on educational attainment of fathers and an outline of procedures and methods of data collection are appended. (PHR)
