Yankee Forum. A Journal of the Connecticut Council of the Social Studies. No. 1, 1979.
Lynch, Francis P., Ed.
Yankee Forum, n1 Entire Issue 1979
The journal, written by Connecticut teachers, covers various aspects of social studies education in that state. The objectives are to serve as a forum for exchange of information, to be a catalyst for dialogue on issues of common concern, and to be a source of mutual support and professional growth. The journal is comprised of five articles. The first article evaluates the Connecticut Assessment of Educational Progress on citizenship/social studies education, pointing out flaws in test items, insufficient evidence for conclusions drawn, and internally inconsistent recommendations. The second article discusses the state of citizenship education in the curriculum, recommending more emphasis through learning in a community-based environment. The third article assesses social studies courses in middle, junior, and high schools in the Hartford area, concluding that traditional courses are taught to the younger students and there is no pattern in the high school. Good and bad points of this condition are discussed. The fourth article presents an interview with Dr. William Jacobs about his tour of mainland China, especially Chinese educational objectives. The final article discusses ways to assess map, globe, and geography skills. (CK)
