Salaries in Early Childhood Education: Their Effect on Standards.

There is a growing need for preschool teachers. The enrollment of 3- and 4-year-olds in preschool has grown steadily and the number of young children with working mothers has also increased. Many parents would prefer to place their children in day care centers if they could find centers with staff trained in early childhood education. The number of preschool teachers needed will continue to grow if parents' needs for day care services are met by establishing enough centers. Yet preschool teachers are paid disgracefully little. While it is reasonable to assume that the group of day care workers who earn the least have no special training, staff who have Associate degrees or Child Development Associate credentials do not fare much better. Even head teachers with B.A. degrees earn less than public school teachers. The increase of the Federal minimum wage in 1979 has had far-reaching effects on the wages of early childhood personnel. Many centers have not had the budget to give all employees the same percentage increase received by those being raised to the minimum wage. This is unfair to employees with more training and/or seniority. Low salaries make it difficult to keep standards up. The quality of care is bound to suffer even more in the future if adequate salary levels are not established. (JMB)
