Determinants of Parental Choice in Schooling: The Coquitlam Experience.
Cogan, Susana
Parents living in the Coquitlam School District in British Columbia can choose between public and private schools and between English language and French immersion programs in the public schools. This study investigates the choice-making behavior of parents enrolling their children in kindergarten in fall 1977 in terms of socioeconomic factors, access and ability to use information, mastery of English, and sources of information. The study isolates those elements acting as determinants of parental choice and contributes to the debate on choice by informing policy-makers about the sources of information parents use in selecting schools and programs, their reasons for the choice, and the criteria they employ.
