Louisiana Parish School Board Members, 1977: Profile and Opinions on Selected Topics. Research Report, Vol. 8, No. 2.
Blackmon, C. Robert; Jones, Sue C.
The purpose of this study was to construct a profile of the characteristics of the 684 Louisiana public school board members serving in 1976 and to report on their opinions on selected education topics. A total of 341 board members responded to the instrument constructed and mailed by the researchers. Among the results is the finding that the typical Louisiana public school board member is male, white, approximately 47 years of age, married, and a father of children who are enrolled in public schools. He has never been employed in an education-related position, has attended college, and earns about $20,000. He tends to be conservative on education related issues, favoring corporal punishment in school and compulsory school attendance, and not favoring teacher collective bargaining or the current Louisiana teacher tenure law. Tables depicting selected opinions by sex, ethnicity, age, education, income, and number of years of service are included. Other profile data and opinions are appended. (Author/JM)
