This book serves both as a reference and as a source book for teaching and for discussion of the issue of the role of religion in education. The author provides a brief review of the background and pivotal decisions of the Supreme Court. Chapter 1 includes background information for understanding the constitutional provisions and introduces some contemporary controversies in education that deal with the separation and interaction of church and state. Relevant Supreme Court decisions and opinions over the past 50 years are reviewed in Chapter 2. The appendices provide (1) a questionnaire concerning the legality of specific practices, with answers keyed to case references in the book, (2) a list of issues for discussion, (3) a glossary of legal terms, and (4) an index of U.S. Supreme Court cases covered in the book.
