Methodology of Historical Research of Reading Instruction: Principles and Criteria.

This report surveys the significance and implications of the question of how the knowledge of past reading instruction might engender a better understanding of contemporary practices and help to resolve current problems. The report advocates the necessity of educator/historians and outlines the requirements for their dual training and experience. Among specific methodological criteria proposed for engaging in and evaluating historical research in reading instruction are the following: research question and objective, source, utilization of sources, terminology, the written report, and bibliography.
