Effects of Stress Inoculation Training on the Anger Management Skills of Institutionalized Juvenile Delinquents.

Although the problem of aggression generates considerable social concern, aggressive delinquents are rarely provided with more than minimal treatment following legal processing and incarceration. When treatment is available, it usually consists of some form of ineffective or even counterproductive punishment administered in the context of a token economy. To see if a more useful approach to the treatment of juvenile delinquent aggression is possible, 27 institutionalized male delinquents evidencing verbal and physical aggression in response to anger provocations were exposed to one of three experimental conditions: no treatment (NT), consisting only of pre- and posttreatment assessment; stress inoculation (SI), including provision of an educational rationale, coping and self-instructional skills training, therapist modeling and rehearsed practice of non-aggressive responses to provocations; and treatment elements (TE), involving a regimen of relaxation training and rehearsed practice of non-aggressive provocation responses. Only SI was effective in decreasing verbal aggression exhibited during laboratory role play provocations. Implications of cognitive behavior therapy techniques in treating anger control problems of delinquents are discussed. (Author/LS)
