Individual and Group Counseling: A Competency-Based Manual for In-Service Training.
Fagen, Stanley A.; Guedalia, Leonard J.
This manual presents the content and activities employed in the inservice course entitled "Individual and Group Counseling," to sensitize teachers and counselors working with mainstreamed students. The manual is designed to develop competency in effective counseling centering around four basic abilities. Module 1 provides an overview of concepts and skills for counseling and helping. Module 2 focuses on understanding and clarifying communications. Skills for responding with respect and empathy are taught in Module 3. Module 4 promotes an ability to use one's own thoughts and feelings, by sending "I Messages" to further trust and acceptance in a helping relationship. The course and modules are intended for regular as well as supplementary teachers, and it is in such a way that the counseling skills learned will be used in the classroom with regular and special students.
