The Unemployed Youth Programme. An Evaluation.
Davies, A. C.; And Others
In response to rising youth unemployment, the South Australian Department of Further Education established the Unemployment Youth Programme to equip the young with vocational and life skills. After eighteen months of operation, an evaluation was undertaken to assess the effectiveness of the programs in training the young unemployed with work and social skills while at the same time providing social, psychological, and moral support. To gather the data, six different groups of clients were surveyed. These groups were participants in the program, principals of colleges of further education, project officers in each region, instructors of programs, parents of the young unemployed, and employers and their representatives. Analysis of the data indicated that the programs were successful in equiping youth with work-related skills demanded by the community. Also, 34 percent of the participants surveyed had successfully gained employment while still completing their training program. It was recommended that the program be continued and expanded.
