Disadvantage and the Education of Young Children.
Green, Jean; And Others
This paper is a compilation of summaries and comments made at this conference on disadvantaged young children. The discussions presented are centered around a number of educational issues. These include the importance and relevance of a child's environment on his academic success, attitudes concerning the proper way to educate children, the role of the family in a child's education and the importance of language in a child's development. Research projects dealing with compensatory programs in the United Kingdom and Belgium are described. The role of television as an educational aid is considered. Observations made by the conference members at on-site visits to various schools are recorded. Reports compiled by discussion groups at the conference dealing with parental involvement, intervention, and related topics are also recorded. Suggestions for improving the educational opportunities of ethnic minorities and other disadvantaged students are made and comments made by participants after the conference are presented. Lists of contact addresses, groups, and participating members are attached. (EB)
