Intended for use in adult basic education programs (ABE) by faculty members of Des Moines Area College, this annotated bibliography reviews textbooks and instructional materials in four coded categories: remedial language (coded R), English language and writing skills (L), arithmetic and mathematics (M), and teaching English as a second language (ESL). The remedial section stresses phonics and reading and includes some basic science and social studies materials. English and writing skills involve sentence construction, grammar, and vocabulary. The mathematics section covers basic operations, some geometry and algebra, and arithmetic in practical situations. English as a second language stresses vocabulary and conversation skills. Each item is structured to include document title, publisher, text format, general content, and reviewer's comments. Each category includes at least thirty references, and the materials reviewed offer a content range from remedial and elementary grade levels to high school and college levels. General Educational Development materials, designed to prepare students for the High School Equivalency exam, are also reviewed. Many resources incorporate practical and functional living skills, such as consumer awareness, career and job planning, and health and safety into their content areas. (DR)
