The Still Camera and the Resulting Photograph: Its History, Its Rationale, and Its Developing Role in Education.

The focus of this paper is on the developing role of the still camera in the general scheme of education, and within the overall concept of visual literacy. A rationale and a workable definition for visual literacy are presented, together with a brief history of the visual message from the paintings on the walls of caves to the modern Land camera. Experiments using still photographs are reported from various educational sources with descriptions of design and results. Anecdotal materials on classroom projects which connect the camera and photograph to learning opportunities are also provided, and a bibliography is attached. (CMV)
