Occupational Socialization in Graduate and Professional Education: An Annotated Bibliography.
Thompson, Jean
An annotated bibliography concerning the socialization of students to the professional role of an occupation is presented. The literature deals with graduate and professional schools as socializing agencies and reflects disagreement concerning the relative importance of faculty student interaction, student culture, preexistent student characteristics, and program structure. Some sociologists question whether professional socialization occurs at all in the educational setting. Since major studies of medical education in the 1950's, the research in professional socialization has consisted primarily of small-scale empirical studies, and little comparative work has been attempted.
