Student-Outcomes Questionnaires: An Implementation Handbook.

The Student Outcomes Questionnaire and the Student Outcomes Information Analysis Service (SOIS) developed by NCHEMS and the College Board are discussed. The term, "student outcomes," is defined as the consequence of a student's enrollment in an educational institution and involvement in its programs. The importance of this type of information is discussed. General information and guidelines for using the questionnaire and the SOIS are presented. The SOIS provides services that include: (1) a plan for collecting student outcomes information and integrating it into a student outcomes information system; (2) general guidelines for conducting studies to obtain cross-sectional or longitudinal student outcomes information at the postsecondary level; (3) specific questionnaires for conducting student surveys; and (4) a question response-analysis service that provides computer printouts of analytical information. Questionnaires and services are provided for both two- and four-year institutions. Plans for developing and administering the questionnaires are provided as well as recommendations for developing a student outcomes data collection plan; using the SOIS Questionnaire Analysis Service; coding, processing, and analyzing the data; and interpreting the results. Appended are the two-year colleges questionnaires, the four-year colleges and universities questionnaires, samples of survey results, and questionnaire keypunching formats. (BH)
