The application of an approach to language and language learning to the design of an eight-week summer course in English for Saudi Arabian students is described. Given at the Institute of English Language Education in Lancaster, England, the course consisted of three introductory mini-units, each providing one day's material, and six main units, each of which occupied a week. The view of language and language learning on which the course was based is discussed as well as cognitive and affective processes that influence learning. The overall course plan is outlined and the major components of a teaching unit are described. Sample materials, exercises, and teaching notes are included. (Author/AMH)
