Equality of Educational Opportunity.
Schwartz, Allen D.
This chapter discusses the issue of discrimination as a principal may be charged with it in the performance of his or her day-to-day duties. A principal's recommendations for teacher employment, dismissal, or disciplinary action are fraught with possible claims of discrimination, the paper notes. In dealing with students, too, a principal's decisions with respect to discipline and students' participation in regular or extracurricular activities are potential sources of claims based on discrimination. This chapter surveys court cases that have challenged school districts' employment practices and reviews pupil discrimination cases concerned with issues other than race. A discussion of enforcement procedures for Title IX completes the chapter. (Author/LD)
