What to Do in the Event of a Strike.
Dolnick, Samuel L.
The purpose of this chapter is to encourage principals to develop a plan of action in anticipation of a teacher strike at their school. The paper briefly details case histories of strikes between 1962-73. Then it defines the critical role of the principal during and especially after a strike. Finally, specific suggestions for principals are offered such as exerting strong yet benignant leadership, developing a communications network, and protecting the students. The paper concludes that the most challenging period in a principal's professional career could be the aftermath of a strike. Thus a plan of action should be developed so that the students again become the prime consideration in the educational program. (Author/LD)
