Proficiency Verification Systems (PVS): Skills Indices for Language Arts. Technical Note.

The procedures undertaken in developing and organizing skills indexes for use in coding elementary school language arts textbooks to determine what is actually taught are presented in this paper. The outlined procedures included performing a preliminary analysis on four language arts textbooks to compile an extensive list of skills and performance modes for each text; coordinating the lists of skills across textbooks into major categories; organizing the resulting categories into the 12 skills areas of discourse type, textual characteristics, processes, word study, history, mechanics, parts of speech, grammar, discourse study, reference skills, language theory, and miscellaneous; and analyzing the lists to determine which performance modes could be combined by rewriting their task descriptions. Appendixes contain a list of the textbook series used in the preliminary analysis, a sample coding sheet, the final content index, and the final consolidated performance modes index. (FL)
