Strathclyde Experiment in Education: Govan Project. A Public Report.

In this report, the background, progress, and evaluation of the Govan project for educationally disadvantaged inner city children are discussed. Background information is discussed in terms of (1) the interaction between disadvantagement and education; (2) the relative success of intervention programs such as Headstart in the United States; (3) a pilot study in Govan; and (4) the practical framework, philosophical approach, fundamental educational principles, and program patterns of the Govan project. The Govan project is described in terms of its location and facilities, neighborhood education, education in the primary school, project resources, and its administration and management. The evaluation of the project examines significant educational contact with the community, utilization of resources and educational underachievement of students. In addition, the following topics are examined: (1) apathy of parents; (2) education and regeneration of the community; (3) the role of parents and professionals; (4) development of home/school relationships and promotion of inservice training; (5) administration; and (6) prerequisites for change in the practice of parents and teachers.
