Data for Massachusetts FY 1978: Comparative Public Library Report.
Massachusetts State Board of Library Commissioners, Boston.
Designed to facilitate the rapid comparison of fiscal year 1978 support and activity levels among public libraries in Massachusetts, this report identifies twelve indicators of library support and activity and presents percentage and per capita figures for each municipality. Data are for the twelve-month period ending June 30, 1978, and represent 314 or 91 percent of the 346 municipalities with public libraries in the state. The twelve summary tables of the first section display the mean (average), median, and the 10th, 25th, 75th, and 90th percentile values of each indicator for six population groups (the 100,000+ group was excluded due to the small number of municipalities this size). The indicators include library expenditures, total income, municipal appropriation, total operating income, salary expenditures, materials expenditures, print holdings, nonprint holdings, and circulation of both types of materials. The municipal tables of the report's second section contain data for individual municipalities arranged in seven population groups based on the 1975 census (these tables include the group excluded in the summary tables). The report concludes with the questionnaire form and its instructions, used to gather the data, and a memorandum regarding library expenditures as percent of total municipal expenditures. (Author/JD)
