Aspects of Lecturing: A Practical Guide for IDEA Users.
Brock, Stephen C.
Practical suggestions for effective lecturing are offered and what educational objectives are accomplishable by means of lecturing are discussed in this guide. The following topics are addressed: effective lecture delivery, managing lecture content, and motivating listeners. Ways to vary the stimuli and making a point in lecture delivery are considered, including using humor, mixed media, and questions. To effectively manage lecture content, the following suggestions are made: adopt some organizational scheme for each lecture, make the organization of the lecture explicit, and provide students with a lecture outline. Students may be motivated if the teacher links course material to real-life situations and makes explicit the interrelationships in course content. Factors useful for maintaining audience attention are listed, and the importance of teacher enthusiasm is emphasized. (SW)
