This basic course is designed for persons who have been involved in training but who lack apprenticeship in training theory, design, and delivery. The purpose of the course is to increase participants' knowledge of the following areas and skills: learning theory, group process, needs assessment, writing training goals and behavioral objectives, selecting curriculum, designing training sessions, delivering training sessions, evaluating training, making interventions, and adapting training materials. The training strategy combines didactic instruction and experiential learning with such varied training methods as lectures, demonstrations, task-group exercises, guided group discussions, and individual reading assignments. Learning activities are designed to facilitate large-group and small-group interactions and to provide trainees with an opportunity to practice skills they can use on the job. Each module provides new information to be presented, analyzed, and applied in practice sessions. The evaluation methodology incorporates written objective tests, simulations, trainer self-evaluations, and trainee feedback. The manual contains not only the course content but charts and forms for each module, task performance guidelines, materials and handouts related to the lectures, a bibliography and a glossary.
