This paper uses recent decisions on collective bargaining involving teachers in discussing educational implications under the headings of academic freedom, freedom of speech for the teacher as a citizen, and the teacher as a role-model for students. It concludes that state legislatures should take action to provide a mechanism by which teachers can have significant input in the decision-making process and resolve disputes within the guidelines of the law.
