An Interactive, Perceptual and Shared Perspective on Leadership: Development of a Fuzzy Measurement Procedure.
Spillman, Bonnie; And Others
This report presents preliminary findings concerning the utility and validity of a new fuzzy matrix procedure for the measurement and identification of leader emergence and hierarchical structure of leadership in small groups. The instrument was designed to reflect the interactive, perceptual and shared nature of leadership. Several leadership identification techniques were reviewed, noting their inherent problems. Results from the pilot test demonstrated the utility of the fuzzy measurement procedure, its advantages over rank order measurement, and its ability to extract higher information levels about the structure and emergence of leadership. Several lines of research using this new measurement technique are explored in conjunction with consensus, coalition, and behavioral interactions in small-group research. (Author/RL)
