Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corp., Brooklyn, NY.
This is a report on the results of the Family Education Program, which is described as a demonstration and action program which incorporates parent education with an existing teacher training program to raise the achievement levels of intermediate students at Intermediate School (I.S.) 55, Brooklyn, New York. Methods and procedures of the program are outlined. The results presented indicate that the achievement levels of fifth and sixth grade students in mathematics and reading were higher for those whose parents participated in the program than for those whose parents did not. Appendices include attendance records for parents who attended workshops and parent events, outlines of each event, contacts made by parent coordinators and results of the contacts, correlation and comparisons of test scores, samples of forms and letters used in the Family Education program, and an analysis of the repercussions the violent death of a student at I.S. 55 had on the school and on the Oceanhill-Brownsville section of New York.
